Time for some tourists to show up in our little world here. It was also time for another random Wally moment. More talk on Antarctica tourism later.

Global Warming Fun Time

Global WarmingThe Al Gore sponsored movie, An Inconvenient Truth opened last weekend. It’s always impressive for a documentary to show up at the mainstream theaters. I’m not sure that the general public takes global warming or Al Gore seriously enough to see this. I haven’t seen it myself and will probably catch it when it’s available to rent. Not really worth seeing on the big screen to me and I keep updated on the global situation pretty well that it’s not going to offer anything new. Still I think it will be interesting to see and hopefully it adds to some awareness about our environment on a more global level to the general crowd.

Here’s the movie trailer:

That global warming is happening is a fact. But the reasons for the world heating up is something different from what most people think is global warming.
Most people make a direct link between the greenhouse effect and global warming, but this is a mere theory.
Most likely we’re in a hotter period of the ups and downs of planet earth. In the middle ages we had higher average temperatures then we get now but you and I both know there was no such thing as a massive CO2 problem back then.
Im not saying the greenhouse effect has nothing to do with things, but blaiming only this would be a too simple conclusion when looking at our history.

yea, I found out that there is an bioplastic ,that is made out of corn and uses 75% less
energy ,aslo a engine that uses water ,and gives out pure oxogen

  3. A Scientist says:

Only someone with absolutely no scientific training would state the phrase “mere theory”.

  4. RW says:

I love Wally’s way of making less tourists in Antarctica.

I really can’t comment much on the global warming thing, because actually I’ve never been more educamated about global warming before I started reading this comic.

  5. Snow-Drop says:

Loving the On the Rocks comics πŸ˜€ They get better and better. Wally owns the tourists o_O.

    Movie actually looks kinda cool.

And urrr…Tyler, just for the sake of the people who drew them, there are two fan-art pics that look kinda cool on the previous page o_O

  6. antarticus says:

down here in florida we have bumper stickers that say “if it’s tourist season why can’t we shoot ’em?”

  7. Adam says:

“Most people make a direct link between the greenhouse effect and global warming, but this is a mere theory.”

Actually, the controversy is how much of an effect the greenhouse effect has. It has /some/ effect for sure. It might even be a negative (that is, keeping temperatures lower) one due to negative feedback (so, plants grow faster which makes forests recover quicker – for instance). It might not be.

lol, wally cracks me up in this one. I just love this comic! πŸ˜€

  10. Bill says:

  11. SPAM says:

    muhahahahahahahahahah

  12. Hannah says:

Ok……..How can Wally throw that far?
And, I don’t think there are tourists in Antarctica………are there?

Anyway I guess its like cartoons.

    Great comic. πŸ˜€

This one was pretty damn funny.

  14. Google says:

Yes, there are tourists in antarctica. Since 1957.

  15. Sev says:

If anything, I think an Al Gore movie will only exacerbate the biggest problem that I see in the US: People think of global warming as a political, rather than scientific, issue. This stems from any number of reasons, but when you get right down to it, your opinions regardign taxation, welfare, social security and the like really oughtn’t to affect your perception of weather phenomena.

Oh, and Hi. I’ve not been around the interweb much lately. OtR still rocks. I must wonder what people will think of the poor unfortunate tourist’s story?

“A polar bear threw a rock at me.”
    “Brain damage. Very sad.”

  16. Katy says:

Yes, there are natural higher and lower temperature cycles that have been recorded throughout the Earth’s history.
However, we are currently in one of the peak record temperature highs, and the most rapidly increasing one (ie, average world temperatures have never risen this quickly).
It is true that there are higher average world temperatures recorded in the world’s history. In the Middle Cretaceous, average world temperatures were much higher–however, if we were to repeat these highs, the conditions of the planet would be unlivable for us.

  19. Fonds says:

Coming back to what Adam said.. I agree with u that greenhouse effect is defenitly a factor… But how much “credit”, if you will, we give that factor is still the question.
By mere theory i meant how much the fact that some of us totally stamp the greenhouse effect as the one and only problem causer.

Nice replies btw, some interesting thoughts πŸ™‚

Fonds Says that global warming “is a mere theory.” Yes, it is a theory. The same way gravity is a theory (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theory_of_gravitation). The same way the notion that germs cause illness is a theory (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germ_theory).

Don’t be so dismissive of the word “theory.” People who dismiss Evolution do the same thing. What they seem to not understand/choose to ignore is that, in order for serious scientists to call something a theory, there has to be a lot of evidence to support it. And if you really don’t understand that, you should probably go back to your high school and tell them they did a poor job with your science education.

  21. Toddy Boy-o says:

Global Warming is nothing. The earth has been in a ice age for the past 500 years, and is now getting out of it. If you look at data, the only places that are getting warmer are the ones that have the most asphalt and the most people. Small towns have actually gotten warmer. It’s a fact that New York, New York has warmed, but look at Albany, New Yort, It has gotten cooler. They’re so close together yet havve opposite trends? Hmm, where’s global warming there?

    Todd

  22. MyrddinEmrys says:

Albany is like, 150 miles away from NYC! They have completely different weather patterns (Albany is dominated by cold, Canadian air and storms coming off the Great Lakes, while NYC is dominated by the Gulf Stream in the Atlantic), of course they’re gonna be different!

Look, Global Warming doesn’t mean every single place on the globe is going to get warmer (even George Bush understands that). What it does mean is that, _ON_AVERAGE_, the global temp is increasing.

I don’t know about Albany specifically, but if you take the average temps of all the places that have decreased and compare it to the average temp of all the places that’ve gotten hotter, I’ll bet you anything that the decrease in colder places is less than the increase in the hotter places… On average, the world _IS_ getting warmer. If you don’t believe it, fine, go bury your head in the sand and don’t bother us anymore… The rest of us wanna read the comic now! πŸ˜‰

    global warming. hot. we die

  24. Sonriente says:

Tourist are a necesary problem in many places. I live closer to the antartica than most people around here (Chile) and many of the “antartic tours” begin in the south of my country(San Rafael, Todos los Santos, Ice FIelds, etc), giving a great bite of food to a lot of people that lives in the cold. I think could be great if more tourist come to the south and lower the prices… so I can go to see pengüins on my own country too… XD

  25. Sonriente says:

    Oh..
And the planet, yes, is getting warmer. The only problem is I don’t really know if we can or MUST stop that. I mean: if the global warming isn’t a “human gas heat trap” thing, but part of a natural cicle… which will be our reaction to that?

As far as I know, the CO responsability in the warming is not yet truly demonstrated, neither the “cicle” theory. So… what to do? Where to make complaints? IMO the commercial abusive strategies of many companies in the world are far more criticable than the envirormental aspect. City contamination is really destructive, with or without warming thing. The way our civilization LIVES is a problem… more than the little issues of CFC and such…
