: Freshly Molted Penguin
Feb 24, 2006

I knew we needed some closure on this molting issue. Two weeks of molting, we practically watched Osbourne molt in realtime. I could have had a molt cam set up and running.

Actually if you’ve been watching the penguin cam I posted a long time ago you would see the chicks have grown up and the adults have been molting. Looks like there is currently some technical difficulties with the nest closeup camera though.

On the Rocks Reviewed

Various people that enjoy sharing their opinions and commentary on webcomics have been writing up some reviews of On the Rocks. Apparently it has drawn enough attention to warrant review, where these critics corner your little comic in a back alley and deliver kidney punches. I guess there is not much point to read them if you are already a reader, but if it amuses you then feel free to check them out. Actually mostly nice stuff was written. I just like to print out the nicest things said, lay the printouts out on the floor and roll around in them while playing loud opera.

“Funny… attractive… It’s just what a webcomic should be: a quick bit of well-crafted entertainment, with a skewed point of view and a neat way of portraying situations.”
— Comics Worth Reading

I was just so relieved to find my comic mentioned on a site like comicsworthreading.com, it is just so much better than finding it on say… comicsnotworthreading.com or something, I would have have been in tears.

“The humor is consistently good, and the artwork surprisingly expressive… this series bears watching (pun unintended).”
— The Webcomics Examiner (Scroll it down)

They even said that I was competent and funny. The funny is a given, but competent, ha, I have even fooled the critics! I laugh!

“Are you lauging out loud, because you should be.”
— Online Comics Blogspot

This one seems to be by Julie who comments here, thanks Julie!

“…it’s a pretty good read. No real commitment level to speak of, and a high degree of “chuckle-factor”…”
— The Webcomicker

Gilead sliced the comic open and displayed its inner workings and organs. Gross but informative!

“On the Rocks is always funny.”
— Jim Burgess of Able & Baker (Scroll it way down)

This isn’t even a review. Jim has just plugged the comic a couple times and said nice stuff. On the outside I pretend I don’t even know or care, but on the inside I go in the corner and cry little tears of joy.

If 10 people say your comic is funny, then it must be. Actually, if I say it’s funny, then it must be – screw everyone who doesn’t like it.

I really love on the rocks comics, and whoever does not like them, are just plain mean and dumb, in my opinion. Thanks for having them! 😀 😉

On the Rocks by Tyler “Self Deprecating” Martin

The first panel is classic. By the way, now that critics have started taking notice of you, the wikipedia article won’t be going anywhere

  9. Rusty says:

This site is great. I love the theme. Some of the comic strips are pure gold, and the ones that aren’t are atleast silver.

  10. Rusty says:

I just told about ten or so people about the comic. They all love it.

Hey, just went to see that new movie ‘Eight Below’….takes place in Antartica.,..,,story about a dog team,,,great movie. Anyways, they show one clip of the Adelie penguins, but they also showed the leopard seal in action ….WOW ! .. they’re certainly not like your average looking cuddly, snuggly seals that most of us probably knew about. ….no sureeeeee….those guys don’t play around. And for those snow lovers, this movie might open your eyes to the “not so pleasant’ part of Winter…..heh,heh. Have a great day!

  12. Sev says:

Hey, looks like your server has recovered from Kurtz’ linkage.

You’ve hit the big time now, eh?

  13. Martin says:

Nice subtle humor. like it … 😉 — and thanks for the link to my little webcam project!

By the way – I just remeber a cartoon showing a polar bear eating an igloo (you see human footsteps in the snow “going” into the iglu, so you know that somebody was inside). The polar bear says to an other bear standing near by: “I like those things: outside crunchy and inside juicy”

  14. Conor says:

    He looks so happy!

  15. bobo says:

i think Ashley said it best oh and Martin iv herd of that before.

Just stumbled upon this site. Very well done. Being a bird afficianado myself, I can feel his pain, so to speak. Moulting is not pleasant to watch (and I can only assume it’s not pleasant to endure, either. I’ve been told it’s much like cutting a new tooth, only all over their bodies and all at once).

Osborne can now tap dance, slip-slide, and he can swim forever.
