: Cowboys: Marshmallows
Nov 30, 2005

Hello boys and girls. The word for the day is “Marshmallow”, in addition to being a tasty treat made from sugar and boiled animal skin and bones, it is also slang for a timid, cowardly or innefective person. Next time someone is wimping out on you, go ahead and call them a marshmallow. 😉

Boiled animal skin and bones eh? Maybe Osbourne would taste like mallow.
Maaaaalow! Maaaaalow! Oh and BTW the proper slang definition of Marshmallow (in my opinion heh heh) is someone who is fat and squishy and makes you want to bite them maybe even break the skin a lil but you don’t you just pinch em’ instead. : )

  2. Tyler Martin says:

LOL, no biting people. Not even when they look really squishy with that soft white pastey skin. 🙂

But yeah, boiled up with the right sweeteners… I think I will make a new Marshmallow brand featuring animal skeleton mascots. It will be a hit with the kids.

  3. Relyt says:

is marshmallow really made from animal skin? mmmmm all the more reason to enjoy it!

  4. Tyler Martin says:

Tendons and ligaments too. Marshmallows as well as some other sweet snacks contain gelatin. Look up the manufacture of gelatin for more juicy info.

  5. Nick says:

    *shudders*

    last time i eat marshmallows…

    kick *** comic btw…

  6. Matt says:

Marshmallows are like sausages. The less questions you ask about what’s in them, the better.

  7. Larry says:

    Tyler,

Wanted to say a big CONGRATS on the deal with FunBrain!! That is wonderful. I hope that grows into more deals for you. Your strip is PERFECT for an educational site, especially with the nuggets you add in your text. I am proud of you, man!
Hmmm, maybe I ought to chat with some toy companies….

  8. Sev says:

I don’t understand how someone who eats meat can be grossed out by gelatin.

I mean, you have no problem eating muscle tissue, blood vessels, nerves, fat, and sometimes skin, but purified collagen is gross?

Sort of backwards if you ask me.

  9. Tyler Martin says:

Sev, maybe it’s more a matter of eating meat products when you don’t realize it or are not expecting it. Like here’s a peppermint candy, ha ha, that’s meat! Oh you cheeky monkey you got me!

Maybe its the visualization of the discarded slaughterhouse pig and cow carcusses being boiled to extract protein while you are enjoying a fluffy little snack. I’m not sure as I don’t eat pig or cow and try to avoid gelatin products. I think in general in this day and age we are growing more comfortable picturing everything coming from sterile plastic containers.

Also thanks Larry, I guess I better mention that in the next comic’s news post too since probably nobody knows what you are talking about and might just think you are some crazy webcomic transient… I’m not saying that you’re not though, I won’t take that option away from you. And it would be great to see Toyzville at some sort of toy site.

Marshmallows were originally made with the juices of the March Mallow plant. This plant and other good substitues are hard to grow and harvest. Instead, you can make marshmallows with pectin instead of geletin and I wonder why vegitarian marshmallows are not being made somewhere commercially. My take on things is a little different then vegitarians… I want to set up to not need to buy anything. If you are a meat eater, you will have to raise and butcher your own animals but it is so much easier to just go vegitarian and just need a greenhouse. Geletin would be hard to produce from small animals which you would be raising in a city so pectin is the only alternative. I have made several of your typical geletin things (gummi candies, jello, pudding) using pectin instead but I am not sure how to concentrate the pectin yet.

  11. Tyler Martin says:

Wow, you are really into it then. Being self-sufficient would be a pretty amazing feat, especially in the city. What about Arrowroot, how hard would it be to grow a type of it in a greenhouse? I’ve heard of it used as a substitute. I believe Tapioca is a type of Arrowroot and it seems to have a nice “gel” consistency. I don’t really know anything about the processes involved. Although you could probably survive without gelatin or gelatin substituted products too. 😉
