: Deserted Island: Internal Navigation
Jan 3, 2006

Many animals have some sort of built-in global navigation system. Traveling the world and returning to the places they were born or hatched. It’s pretty amazing. Us humans are just now installing such systems in our cars. I usually have a good sense of direction but rarely remember how to get somewhere I’ve only been to once.

When young penguins finally leave the parents, little is known about where they go. However, many of them arrive back one day in Spring to the same nesting grounds to have their own family. In fact, very little is known about where adelie penguins go when they leave Antarctica in the winter too. They apparently live out in the open seas but to this day their travels go undocumented.

Personally, I think they go to Madagascar and taunt and eat the lemurs (the penguin/lemur conspiracy goes on).

I, however, have an easy time remembering how to get back to a place once I’ve been there. Perhaps I’m part penguin.

    Just found your webcomic..
    Read it all.
    Awesome work, keep it up.

I guess since the world is round, the penguins just have to keep swimming in a straight line until they get back to where they started.

Either that, or they don’t actually go anywhere and hide for a few months.

I thought the cameras being strapped to the backs we helping scientists figure out where they were going?

    Perhaps penguins hide in
underground caves during that time, hibernating in a frozen state…?

Oh yeah, it seems to be a tradition around these comment boxes to announce your first post and that you’re new to the comic, so consider this my official notice that I’m a new reader who loves your work, Tyler! I love what you’ve accomplished with a limited color palette and only 2 speaking characters–it’s really an inspiration that there are artists out there who can find a niche and exploit it to its full potential. I feel pretty confident in saying you do that.

Let’s see, what else… oh yeah, I’d like to see more t-shirt designs, and I love the good clean humor & the informative news posts each day. I’m pretty sure now I could clean up at trivial pursuit if there were an Antarctica & Penguins category. Love the strip, keep up the good work!
