: Crude Oil
Apr 18, 2006

Antarctica is often referred to as the last unspoiled place on earth. Unfortunately that is changing and it is only a matter of time. As far as I know, to this day there are old wrecked ships there still leaking fuel into otherwise clean waters. I’ve seen some older TV specials where they would occasionally check the wrecks and try to keep the old tanks welded up. With more humans travelling and working there, coupled with the lack of ozone and global warming we could see this last continent change drastically in this next century.

Saving the Polar Bear

Wally seems pretty indestructable but real polar bears are getting thinner as their hunting ice gets thinner. With the way things are going, one day there may be no ice at all in the arctic during the summer. Summer is a long time without much food for polar bears and two US explorers are going to travel the arctic (1,100 miles) by foot and canoe studying their changing habitat. More information at CNN.

DinoPenguin!

Okay, maybe not really a dinosaur, but a penguin that lived before the dinosaurs died out has been discovered. Its fossils are the oldest penguin fossils on record, unearthed in New Zealand. Read more at National Geographic.

Tyler, do you scour the web for penguin and polar bear news? i confess i am oblivious of all of these things you list, pengiun dinosaurs, wrecked ships still leaking and all the other fascinating facts that you put on your strips. i remember seeing a comment in the past that your strip is unique in its wiki type posts below each strip.

it definatly brings me back each day, becuase although the subject is hard to bring into common conversation, knowing these facts just makes me feel a little bit smarter every day 🙂

so erm, thanks for that =)

  19. Sev says:

Also, this Polar bear expedition sounds exciting, like the much-hyped “Megatransect.”

  20. Katy says:

“oil es no bueno para bears de polar” is a Spanglish version of the english sentence, Oil is no good for polar bears.
Spanish would be “aceite es no bueno para los osos polares”
Yay living in LA is useful =-D

Guys, don’t complain about the lack of comic. It’s 10 in the morning, for pete’s sake, and Tyler’s obviously tired.

  27. Cameron Stankich says:

  34. Sev says:

I say we storm the castle and string him up!

  35. SuperVegito says:

@Tyler: Awesum Strip Dude…I Love The Way It Looks, If I’m Not Mistaken You Blended the Vector Style and free hand style…not actually blended but used them both in the same strip 😛 (i suck at describing stuff when i really need too) forgive me for my lack of describ-a-bility-ness type thing, but the main point is “HOLY SWEET WHALE CARCUS!!! THIS IS STYLE SWEET!!” ^_^

  36. Cameron Stankich says:

    YEAH!!!! Um….what castle?

  37. Matt D is right, that was VERY John Kricfalusi of you.

I Just didn’t get to today’s comic as soon as I wanted but it will indeed be up shortly. 😉

  42. Kevin says:

It’s interesting that you mention the old ships leaking fuel in the Antarctic – remember that little thing called WWII? There are ships and planes lying at the bottom of just about every part of the ocean just waiting to unleash their cargoes of fuel on an unsuspecting environment. None of the governments that officially “own” them can afford to empty out the tanks unless they are about to burst.

  43. Wowie says:

    I like the close-up

  44. Penguin Boy says:

    Eeewwwwww.

  45. Sputnix says:

  47. hi guys says:

    the 4th panel is SICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😮 😮 😥

  48. 45Liger says:

Its been almost 3 months scince The Deep Water Horizon exploded. 11 people died, and now, the oil is spreading through the Gulf of Mexico, and harmig and killing a lot of the wildlife and habitits of the ocean, and some marshes and estuaries! 🙁 A lot of animals are covered in oil! 🙁 I hope they are able to clean it up soon.

  49. 45Liger says:

Oh, and crude oil is red or orange(occasionally blue or green). Refined oil is black(occasionally white).
